The Castellane square
This place owes its name to the marquess of Castellane-Majastre who offered the land and financing of the works. For the birth of the 1st emperor Napoleon's son, in 1811, we set up, in its center, an obelisk surrounded with a circular pond. In 1911, this obelisk was transferred to Mazargues where it raises even today in the center of a traffic circle.
As a replacement of the obelisk, there is now a monumental fountain of Carrara marble offered by Jules Cantini, a sculptor from Marseille who became a sponsor. It was sculpted by André-Joseph Allar between 1911 and 1913. The fountain is aligned with " la Porte d’Aix", situated at the North of the city and represents the three streams of Provence: the Durance, the Gardon and the Rhône.
